Lecture 02 - Article 370 – origin, abrogation and outcomes

The Internal Research Committee, VSJMC organized the second lecture of the Special Lecture Series on 11th September, 2019 in Vivekananda Hall, 6th Floor, Block-B on the title “Article 370 – origin, abrogation and outcomes”. Padma Shri, Shri. Jawaharlal Kaul, President, Jammu & Kashmir Study Centre, Delhi and Prof. Rajvir Sharma from Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, were invited to be the official speakers for the lecture.

The recent dilution of Article 370 by a Presidential order on August 5, 2019 took the entire nation by storm. It has also led to heated debates and discussions across the globe. The lecture helped the students to develop the basic knowledge about the article 370 and 35(A) and shed light on the what will be the ramifications of the same. The session commenced with the felicitation of Shri. Kaul and Prof. Sharma at the hands of Chairperson, VSJMC, Prof. Sidharth Mishra and Dean, VSJMC, Prof. Dr. Charulata Singh, respectively. This followed by the welcome address by Prof. Singh.


The lecture commenced with Prof. Sharma introducing the topic to the audience and the duration of the lecture was about two hours. He talked about how Article 370 has been a matter of contention since the day of its insertion. Prof. Sharma shared the legal intricacies and technicalities of the article and its impact on Jammu and Kashmir. He shed the light on the clauses of the article including clause 370(1) and 370(3). Prof. Sharma also drew a comparison between the scenario before and after the scrapping of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. He also talked about the rationale behind the decision and what will be the upcoming challenges.

Prof. Sharma was followed by Shri. Kaul, who then presented the entire issue from a different angle. Shri. Kaul first talked about the wrong misconceived notions with which the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been conditioned. He elaborated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been told that without the special status their rights will be snatched away, their identity, Kasmiriyat, will die and how the demographics will change. Shri. Kaul later explained about how flawed these notions were and what is the real scenario. His lecture was dominated by real life stories and incidents of the people and their experiences.

The session was concluded by delivering of vote of thanks by Prof. Mishra. He addressed the queries by the students and presented his point of view on the issue. He also thanked Shri. Kaul and Prof. Sharma for their time and for the knowledge which they had dissipated
